The IT Closet Isn’t Dead – It’s More Important Than Ever

If you spend any time reading about data centers, you’d think every company is building AI clusters with liquid cooling and hundreds of GPU servers. They’re not.
Most businesses still rely on something much less exciting, but far more common: the IT closet. It’s the room down the hall. Sometimes it’s a converted storage room. Sometimes it’s tucked behind the receptionist’s desk. It might not look impressive, but it’s where the network lives. If that room goes down, so does everything connected to it.
Hammond Manufacturing has built racks and cabinets for these spaces for decades, and one thing hasn’t changed. A well-designed IT closet makes life easier. A poorly designed one becomes everyone’s problem.
The IT Closet Has Changed
Twenty years ago, an IT closet held a switch, a patch panel, and maybe a phone system.
Today it often supports:
- Wireless access points
- VoIP systems
- Security cameras
- Building automation
- Access control
- Fiber distribution
- Edge computing equipment
The equipment has changed. The room usually hasn’t.
Space Is Always Tight
Nobody designs a building around the IT closet. It’s whatever space is left over. That means every inch counts.
Wall-mount cabinets have become the standard because they keep equipment secure without consuming valuable floor space. For larger deployments, a properly planned rack cabinet gives IT teams room to grow instead of forcing another replacement in three years.
Don’t Build It for Today
One of the biggest mistakes often seen is designing around the equipment that’s being installed today. Think about where that room will be in five years.
- Will there be another switch?
- More fiber?
- More security equipment?
- Another UPS?
Leaving extra rack space costs very little during installation. Running out of room later is expensive.
Don’t Forget Airflow
Everyone has all seen the network closet with cables hanging everywhere and equipment stacked wherever it fits. It works…until it doesn’t. Cable management, airflow, and accessibility aren’t nice extras. They’re what make maintenance easier and help equipment run reliably. If your technician has to unplug three cables to replace one switch, the room wasn’t designed well.
The Goal Isn’t Fancy
Very few people walk into an IT closet and say, “That’s a gorgeous installation.” But when everything is labeled, organized, easy to service, and still has room to grow, they can marvel at the professional installation.
